How Voting Will Work on Town Meeting Day March 3, 2026
1. Voting by ballot for both the town officers and the school officials will take place in the Washington Village School gym from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m.
2. Upon entering the gym, note which ballot clerk you need to go to…the checklist will be divided by last name alphabetically.
3. Say your first and last name out loud to the ballot clerk. We require this even if we know you to ensure transparency to others. If you are marked as having been ‘challenged’, you must sign an affidavit of residence before you are given a ballot or ballots. If you have not registered to vote and are eligible, see the Town Clerk for a form to fill out. Bring your social security number or Vermont driver’s license or state issued non-driver’s ID. Upon completion of either above mentioned paperwork or you are already on the checklist without a contingency mark, the ballot clerk will ask you if you want one or both above mentioned ballots.
4. Take your ballot(s) to the privacy of a voting booth and follow the instructions on the ballot(s). You may bring someone in with you should you require assistance.
5. Deposit your ballot(s) into the one ballot box. The ballots will be separated and counted after 7 p.m.
6. If you have a family member or someone you are caregiver for who is homebound and would like to vote the ballot(s), you may sign for the ballot(s), take them to the person, and return by 7 p.m. Election officials will not be able to do perform this on that day.
7. If you are staying for the Town Meeting which will begin at 2 p.m., you must be given a Voter Card by a ballot clerk or election officer. The Voter Cards are all one specific color.
8. For any vote from the floor that is to be counted by division of the house by raising your hand: you must raise your Voter Card.
9. For any vote from the floor that is to be counted by a yes/no paper ballot, you must come to an election official, show your Voter Card, and be given the yes/no ballot. Each yes/no vote will have its own color paper and will correspond to the article being voted on. Each yes/no card will be deposited into the receptacle shown, and will be immediately counted by at least two election officials once all the votes are handed in.
10. Polls close promptly at 7 p.m. with the exception of those waiting in line to check-in, and the ballots will be taken within the ballot box to the town hall, where they will be separated by type (town or school) and counted by teams of election officials.
